Hello

That summer

That Summer is a cult Ray Winstone film that was shot almost entirely on location in Torquay Devon in 1978 when Winstone was in his early 20s. The film follows Steve,  played by Ray who has just got out of bortstal, fed up with his life going no where in London, he decides to travel to Torquay to try and win the annual around the bay long distance swimming race.

This is an enjoyable film if you are a Winstone fan, or if you happen to live in the area where it was filmed. The film's soundtrack includes artists such as Elvis Costello, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, The Boomtown Rats, Wreckless Eric & many more fantastic artists.

Film locations include,The Pickwick inn, the old 400 night club, around Torquay Harbour, The Imperial Hotel, Oddicombe Beach and the Model Village.

That Summer has never been released officially on VHS or DVD. The film wasn't a big hit unlike Ray's previous film Scum. That  Summer has been screened several times on television in the 80s.

The copy that you are purchasing on this website was taken directly from a film reel that had been purchased from a television station. Picture quality is good, however, picture quality is slightly degraded on very large plasma screens, although it is perfectly watchable.   To see the quality of what you will be receiving, please go to our "That Summer Clips" and watch various short segment taken from the film.

I've seen quoted that this film was supposed to be a follow on from scum. Well it obviously isn't as Ray's characters both have different names. In the film Scum, he is called Steve Carlin, whereas in That Summer, his name is Steve Brodie.

If you watch these two films back to back, you will see that the production used a lot of the same characters that were in scum. The actor who played Steve's brother in "That Summer" also played a part in scum, as did the swimming coach in "That Summer". He was a prison guard in scum.
